History rhymes where incentives do

The past does not repeat like a script. It rhymes where the same pressures return: scarce status, cheap credit, new media, fear of being left out.

Reading history for costumes is entertainment. Reading it for incentive structures is orientation. Who benefited? Who could not leave? What was unthinkable until it was obvious?

Those questions travel better than dates.
