Attention is a budget, not a mood

Most people talk about focus as if it were a personality trait. It behaves more like a budget.

You wake with a limited capacity to hold one thing in working memory while the rest of the world asks to be let in. Notifications, unfinished conversations, and open loops all spend from the same account. When the account is empty, you do not become lazy. You become suggestible. The next easy stimulus wins.

Treat attention as an allocation problem. Decide, before the day fragments, what deserves the first ninety minutes. Protect that window the way you would protect rent money. Everything else can queue.

The practical test is simple: if an interruption cannot name the decision it is asking you to make, it is not urgent. It is only loud.
